Jackson was one of the founders of the Democratic Party and was elected as President because of the growing political power of the states on the frontier.He had the support of farmers and working people. Earlier presidents had not provided strong leadership. They did not appeal to the people over the heads of Congress.Jackson insisted that American democracy could work only if the President provided such leadership and he believed that he should use his constitutional powers to the fullest limit. |

History"Miss Mollie" was the last of four generations to occupy Rosemont,the home of John and Susan McKinney Netherland,before it was purchased and then restored by Carl and Janet Netherland-Brown.After the Rosemont sale,she moved into a suite at the Hale Springs Inn and lived there until her death. The land for Rosemont—on the southeastern corner of Main St. andColonial Rd.--was a gift from John McKinney to his daughter, Susan. McKinney was the builder of the Hale Springs Inn, which is older than Rosemont.More…
When Rosemont was sold,many of the contents were given to Netherland Inn in Kingsport—including the dining room table and four Windsor chairs which were a wedding gift from Susan’s father. Susan’s father-in-law, ran the historic old Inn at the Boatyard in Kingsport,when the Netherland family lived on "the island" there. |

Amis had moved from his home in Bladen County to the westernCountry and had established a new home on Big Creek. It was here that Joseph Rogers met and married Mary Amis, daughter of Thomas, on October 24, 1786, When Joseph was 22 and Mary was 16 or 18. (There is some controversy about Mary’s age—her gravestone gives 1768 as her birthdate while Rogers family Records give 1770.) |

Jacob E. Miller
HistoryJacob Eastman Miller was born in Hawkins County on December 17, 1813, son of John and Cynthia Charles Miller, grandson of Peter & Sybil Pitzer Miller. Peter & Sybil Miller settled on Miller's Island in the Holston River in 1780. Their journey started in Pennsylvania where their children were born, stopped off for a while in Virginia and eventually came down the Holston River into Hawkins County.More…
Their oldest son, Jacob, settled on the north side of the Holston River on land presently (or recently) owned by Neil Miller in the area known as Yellow Store (for the general store that once stood nearby). He served in the 13th General Assembly of the Tennessee State Legislature and was active in the Surgoinsville community. Their son, John, settled on the south side of the Holston River and owned land later occupied by his son. The area is on Honeycutt Road and has in times past been known as Chambers Bottom. |
